Behind the Scenes: How We Authenticate Your Timepiece

Buying pre-owned watch online might feel like an opaque process, but there’s a lot happening behind the scenes. At OMI Jewelry, our team of experts works tirelessly to ensure each piece meets our rigorous standards, from authentication to customization. Keep reading to understand what exactly happens between the time you purchase and when you receive your timepiece. Authentication  First, we check all paperwork, documents and descriptions of the piece. This information should align with the product received. The serial numbers on the piece should match the serial numbers on any warranties or certificates.  It’s also crucial to understand what parts are authentic to the piece. Sometimes watches will have authentic replacement parts, but they aren’t actually original to the watch being sold. A watch expert is able to identify if all parts are truly original to the piece, or if someone is trying to pass off a “Frankenwatch” as the real deal. After determining the watch matches the paperwork and description, and no other obvious external inaccuracies are observed, we then examine the internal components of the timepiece. The movement is inspected for authenticity, timekeeping accuracy, and condition. It takes a trained eye to distinguish an authentic watch movement from a knock off. An expert must evaluate even the smallest of details-- they even know if the screws and metal finishes are consistent with the watchmaker’s standards. In-house Servicing   After we authenticate the watch and determine that is up to OMI standards, we then evaluate if any additional servicing is needed. This includes polishing and repairs by our in-house watchmakers. There are so many possible defects that could eventually lead to frustrations and future servicing. This is especially important when buying pre-owned as these watches often don’t come with the original manufacturer’s paperwork by nature.
